Breast Lift / Mastopexy

Breast Lift Santa Ana & San Clemente

A breast lift or a Mastopexy is a procedure that helps reshape and lift sagging breasts due to weight loss, pregnancy, and breast feeding. During a breast lift procedure, Dr. Roham tailors the skin of the breast to elevate it while reducing the size of a stretched out areola which is the colored skin around the nipple. It is important to note that a breast lift involves placing incisions and scars on the breasts and the droopier the breast the more skin that needs to be removed for correction. However, it is just as important to note that the improvement in shape of the breasts after a breast lift usually represents a satisfactory trade off for the incisions and scars placed on the breast. The breast lift procedure may be combined with an implant to add more fullness to the upper poles of the breast. Dr. Roham only recommends small implants when combined with a breast lift since the lift procedure tends to shrink the breast size while an implant tends to expand it and these opposing forces if not properly balanced may result in noticeable scars on the breast. There are many different types of breast lifts and Dr. Roham can help decide which type of a lift is best suited for your breast.

There are three techniques for breast lift surgery: The different types of lift chosen by Dr. Roham depend on the degree of drooping in the breast tissue

  • donut lift or periareolar Lift
This is a lift for women with small breasts or women with only small sagging. This donut or periareolar lift involves removal of a doughnut shaped skin around the areola (brown part of the nipple) and therefore results in elevation of the nipple and areola. The scarring is usually minimal since it is placed at the junction of areola and breast skin. The Donut breast lift also allows for reduction of the size of the areola which is usually stretched with the rest of the breast skin. If a large amount of skin is removed around the areola Dr. Roham will use an interlocking Gor-tex suture placed around the incision to allow proper healing with minimal scarring. This special suture may result in some bunching of skin that usually resolves spontaneously with time.

  • Lollipop lift or Vertical Lift:
involves removal of skin around the areola and the lower portion of the breast. This type of breast lift results in a scar around the areola combined with a vertical scar at the lower portion of the breast. The lollipop breast lift is needed to correct more severe breast drooping, or sagging, where the nipple is below the level of the lower breast crease.

  • Inverted T lift or Anchor Lift:
This type of breast lift involves removal of skin around the areola and the inferior portion of the breast. It is called the anchor lift since skin is removed from both sides of the fold underneath the breast. This type of lift is reserved for situations in which a fair amount of skin needs to be removed. We use this commonly after severe weight loss or when a significant breast volume and skin reduction is desired. The resultant scar appears as an upside down T connected to a circle scar around the areola.
